The other modern fencing style that dominates the current day of electric foil fencing is the Soviet style. The Soviet style is pretty much devoid of predecessors or traditions. Soviet foil fencing which was starting to develop just before the electric scoring machine came into use. Its core fundamentals are based on maximizing efficiency for the scoring device.

Each style has its own merits (and drawbacks) and most modern sword masters teach with an emphasis on one of the national styles. However, they aren’t such strict constructionists that they don’t deviate from the aesthetics of a national style and blend techniques and tactics based upon the sword master’s experiences and what he or she feel that their students can excel at.

With the establishment of fencing federations (e.g. the FIE was founded in Europe in 1913), fencing as a sport has become organized with rules, regulations and accepted formalities that must be strictly observed in international competition. When Baron Pierre de Coubertin, himself a Fencer, revived the Olympic Games in 1896, he made sure that fencing was one of the Olympic events.

As discussed in the introduction, noblemen and aristocrats in various countries in Europe originally developed fencing during the Renaissance. As the sport progressed and various cunningly creative sword masters formed sword schools, each master developed his or her own style and precepts of strategy and tactics.

It does no good for you to fence only one style without adding your own personal flair, panache and discoveries. Remember back in the day when fencing was a dueling method; a Fencer’s personal technique was what could bring him glory in the eyes of his colleagues and in the eyes of women. The personal fencing style combines the precepts of a national style with improvisational touches that a Fencer has discovered that work for him or her to gain advantages on the piste.
